Since our interview a few years ago, Canadian illustrator Allister Lee has been very prolific! In particular, he has produced a large number of graphics for the Avenue & Son brand. His inspiration comes from wandering around antique markets, record shops or simply on the street.
He tells us, for example, that “The ice cream graphics – the two boys’ graphics is from an Air Conditioning company called Haier. We would see stickers of them on air conditioning units throughout Shanghai and peel them off. Everyone kind of knows this graphic. I gave them some ice cream cones and a “Cold Chillin’” style”Avenue&Son” type treatment.
The other one with all the frozen treats – well I tried to show some of the different ice cream bars found in Shanghai / parts of China. The only really recognizable one is the one where it looks like a man wearing a hat. It’s vanilla and chocolate and the face always gets messed up. This was my favourite ice cream snack while living in Shanghai and I only found it sometimes.“
The boards are available at Avenue & Son’s Flagship store in Shanghai, China, and to see more of Allister Lee’s work, check out his website.
